Halswell Quarry preschoolers are learning as they play thanks to Grow Ōtautahi’s 2020 festival partner Xteriorscapes – Landscape Architects.
As part of the 2020 festival, Xteriorscapes, partnering with Gill Landscapes Limited, were designing and building an exciting, child-focused exhibition garden. It was always the plan that the core structural elements of the garden design would be installed into a local preschool after the festival supporting our sustainability and longevity values. That plan became a reality earlier this year when the garden was installed at Halswell Quarry Preschool.
The garden explores the concept of growth through the eyes of children, the production of their food, and care for our indigenous ecosystems. We think it’s pretty amazing to look at (and play on) as well!
In designing the garden, thought was given to making a place where tamariki can begin to understand how the landscape has been shaped, identify where their food comes from and know what it means to live sustainably.
Festival Director Sandi MacRae says the concepts behind the garden fit perfectly with the festival’s focus on education, environment and community.
“We’re so pleased that local children are benefitting from the amazing work of last year’s designers – I’m sure they’re having a blast at the same time as learning about their environment!”
